2010 Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rudy von Strasser’s estate vineyard is a south-facing hillside of volcanic soil. The vines—some planted in 1981 by Bill Roddis; more planted by von Strasser in 1991 and ’98—achieved fine ripeness in 2010, impressive for the vintage in its melding of cool fruit and warm tannins. It’s fattened up by oak, but the fruit completes the structure, feeling luxurious and sexy in the end. This benefits from several days of air as it will benefit from years in the cellar. (655 cases)

2010 Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Reserve

Based on Rudy von Strasser’s signature blend of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot (40 percent each), this wine takes time to open in the glass, moving past the vanillin-influence of oak into the blueberry richness of ripe verdot. It develops from sweet chocolate notes to more detail in both the fruit and the tannins. Built to cellar for five years or more. (197 cases)

2009 Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Post Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rudy von Strasser has farmed this vineyard since 1992—a north-facing site with 2.5 acres of cabernet sauvignon and half an acre of malbec adjacent to his own vines. It produces a rich wine with the dark fruit character of pomegranate and boysenberry. Heady and generously oaked, this packs a lot of flavor in the middle then ends softly. A sleek red to age for several years; it will juice up a steak when you pull it out of the cellar.

2009 Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Sori Bricco Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Von Strasser contracts six acres of the 15 at this vineyard dating to 1968, one of the early plantings on Diamond Mountain. It has the cool, zesty richness the region’s best sites can give, brisk and breezy, grounded by savory tannins as mellow as melted chocolate. Decant it for something as rich as braised beef cheeks.

2010 Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Sori Bricco Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Located in the middle reaches of the Diamond Mountain appellation, at 1,000 to 1,200 feet, this vineyard produced a sweetly ripe cabernet in 2010, its bold, honeyed scent contrasted by more restrained herbal notes. A tight structure holds it firm, needing bottle age to develop past its baby fat. (366 cases)
