2010 Oakville Napa Valley I Block To Kalon Vineyard Fumé Blanc

An old-vine Oakville treasure, I Block is one of those rare opportunities for sauvignon blanc in Napa Valley. Planted on prime cabernet ground in 1945, these stalwarts have survived several replantings of the neighboring vines. Today, they grow a white wine with the structural strength and longevity of a red, the fruit potent enough to live up to the new oak in which a third of it ferments and ages. The initial scents of passion fruit and tropical citrus weave through leesy flavors, all sewn up by lemon-tinged acidity. It’s youthfully firm, needing air to show its layered complexities. Decant it for salmon or rest it in the cellar for ten years. (131 cases)

2011 Carneros Napa Valley Pinot Noir (Best Buy)

Sourced mainly from Stanly Ranch, this is a vibrant wine with the savory stemminess that can make young Burgundy so compelling (it’s about 30 percent whole cluster). It has the tart cherry fruit and clay-like tannins of Carneros, but the brightness of the fruit breaks out of the structure, feeling light and effortless.

2011 Napa Valley Moscato d’Oro (Best Buy)

Ripened to tropical flavors of pineapple, this wine holds its freshness with tighter nectarine fruitiness. It has the sweet scent of lilies of the valley, and the flavors are sweet as well. Then the balance on the finish leaves a clean impression. A fine moscato to serve with fresh fruit. (3,854 cases)

2010 Napa Valley Fumé Blanc (Best Buy)

This is rounded by oak aging, which brings up scents of fennel and beeswax, giving the finish an earthy impression. The fruit is brisk with lemon pith flavors and pinpoint acidity. A dark, savory white for braised pork with fennel.

2010 Napa Valley Reserve To Kalon Vineyard Fumé Blanc

This is a selection of old-vine sauvignon blanc and semillon from the benchland behind the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, some of the source blocks dating to 1945. There’s complexity to the fruit, layering lemon curd over peach and floral scents. There’s also a lot of oak influence showing, with scents of vanilla bean and cedar. This is built to cellar and will likely be at its best eight to ten years from the vintage. (984 cases)

2010 Carneros Napa Valley Reserve Pinot Noir

Green herb scents show the marginal ripeness of this wine’s tannins, while tart acidity gives a blood orange highlight to the fruit. It’s balanced rather than pushed, ending on a warm finish. Built to develop in the bottle.
