Frog’s Leap

$38

2010 Rutherford Napa Valley Merlot

John Williams farms his benchland and valley floor vineyards without irrigation, providing half the fruit for this wine, the balance from growers in Rutherford, plus 11 percent Carneros fruit from Truchard Vineyards. The tannins feel completely mature, providing a lovely underlying roundness to the plump fruit. Those tannins seem sweet, like a fruity mushroom, while the anise and herb-scented fruit itself is savory. A classic Rutherford red.

Frog’s Leap

$75

2009 Rutherford Napa Valley

This is plump, juicy cabernet (89 percent sauvignon, 11 percent franc) with the fresh tobacco-scented fruit these benchland vineyards can give. It’s vinous and elegant, the herbal spice creating an intriguing tension in the finish, lasting alongside red berry flavors. A clean Napa Valley cabernet to pair with lamb.

$30

2011 Napa Valley Zinfandel (Best Buy)

Dry farmed and organically grown, this zin is blended with petite sirah (14 percent) and a drop of carignan in an old-school Napa Valley style. It’s meaty and smooth, with mellow black plum fruitiness cut by spicy cracked black peppercorn scents. The kind of wine to drink with take-out malfatti in Napa (see Wolfgang Weber’s article in the Fall issue for sources).

$27

2010 Napa Valley Zinfandel (Best Buy)

At first, this wine’s dried fruit flavors of figs and dates seem to place it in the Porty side of zinfandel, but there’s a liveliness and a zesty minerality that keeps it grounded and firm. Think granite and pomegranate and you’ll be close to the flavors, their spicy character peppering the smooth, supple texture.

2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Sitting in its tannins for now, this wine has a dusty texture, as well as some greenness. That minty greenness might prove refreshing as the flavors develop; check on it again with a year in bottle.
