2009 Alexander Valley Big River Ranch Zinfandel

An old-fashioned style of zin, this is structured straight through, without a hint of hyper ripeness. The blend is based on a 14-acre block of 110-year-old vines, their limited crop yielding a wine that’s savory in the middle, its broad tannins enriched by flavors of black cherries and crushed strawberries. Those tannins yield a dark, earthy character as the wine extends into the finish. Impressive for its length and breadth, and for the satisfaction it will give when more fully mature, ten years or more from the vintage. (800 cases)

2010 Alexander Valley Big River Ranch Zinfandel

Classical zin in its dark savor, its scents of peppery spice and bitter chocolate, this is dense and meaty rather than sweet. That’s not to say it isn’t warm. Made from fruit grown at an estate vineyard planted in 1906, this wine’s old-vine concentration needs bottle age to gain its fullest expression. (700 cases)

2010 Sonoma County Barrel 32 Zinfandel

A selection of the seven top barrels of zin in Bella’s cellar, this wine includes fruit from Big River Ranch in Alexander Valley, as well as Maple Vineyard and Lily Hill Estate in Dry Creek. It contrasts bright blue fruit with brisk tannins that feel strong for a zin. The texture is luxurious, the flavors layering cool forest mushroom and sweet notes of peach—a zin that will gain complexity with cellar time. (175 cases)

2009 Dry Creek Valley Vineyard Series Maple Vineyards Zinfandel

A big, spicy red, this vintage from Maple Vineyards is a little thick as a young wine, its unctuous fruit needing bottle age to reveal more of the structure underneath. For barbecued ribs. (700 cases)
